Bought a coat....

I got up, ate breakfast (looking forward to having oatmeal again soon), and went to school.  Valeria is of course gone to Milan, and one teacher was acting all weird about leaving me alone with the students, but we finally got it all worked out, and it was just me and them.  However, the class did not go as I wanted it to.  I still did not get to do "Christmas in the U.S." with them because we could not go to a computer room.  So, we were going to just talk about whatever they wanted to talk about.  One girl suggested NYC...which lasted for less than 5 minutes.  Then we tried other subjects such as the differences between U.S. and Italian schools, which lasted about 10 minutes (or less).  It was an annoying hour because the ones who do not speak English well were so loud, and then it just melted down into nothingness.  So, I sat and watched some of my girls put make up on themselves and each other, AND one girl plucked the eyebrows of two other girls.  So, what did they learn today?? NOTHING.. It was rather frustrating to me though.

Next up I ran to the other school, tried to get a coffee from that machine, but it was not what I ordered, and it was nasty!  Patrizia came, and then we all went to the lab.  I did the Christmas in the U.S. lesson, and they were pretty engaging.  We have the same Santa, and they all recognize the Santa from "Miracle on 34th Street".  They all said that they did not like the lights in a few of my pictures, which I purposefully chose to see if they liked when the American houses had a TON of lights.  They all said that they have the same Christmas commercials, but once I showed them, they said that they were actually different.  They were impressed too that sometimes the Coca-Cola trucks with lights on them actually drive around.   They loved the M & M's commercial, which made me happy because it is one of my favorites.  We laughed a good bit, and they loved my picture from NYC of the Rockefeller Christmas tree.  Like some of the other students, they get excited when they see "Home Alone", but the name here has something to do with "mom leaving in an airplane" or something.  Sometimes the Italian translations for movie titles seem strange to me.

Next up was my break.  As I walked to the other building, I wanted a clementine from the guy on the corner, but because I just wanted one he let me have it for free.  I tried to insist on giving him something, but he just kept saying, "vai signorina, vai!!"  So sweet.   So then I got some GOOD coffee, and today it was NOT decaf!  I read Harry Potter in Italian while I waited, and I even asked Patrizia for help on a few words; mainly the words that google translate on my phone would not find.  She was excited to see me reading in Italian, and I was excited to share!  I was also excited at how well I was understanding the words and thus the storyline.  I was so so so excited about this.  Then, Nick called and I stepped out in the hallway to talk to him for a bit.  I talked to him all the way back to the other building, and then as I was standing at the radiator trying to get warm outside of my classroom while I waited.  I tried to go in the class, but the teacher asked for more time.  The Italian classes start soooo late, and thus some teachers run over.  This does suck though for the first teachers of the day (who never get there on time...nor do the students) and then the teachers at the end of the day get jipped.  Some of the students saw me on the phone, and got excited when they saw that it was Nick!  They kept saying, "is that a boyfriend on the phone?!?" I said, "it's Nick, guys!"  They know better because they saw our picture on his computer background last week....

Okay, so Linda's class.  We went to the lab, and this group seemed really interested.  They too loved the NYC picture, but who can blame them?? THey said that some of the lights were too much, and they do not have candy canes here!  I was afraid of that!  We had fun, and they were relatively talkative!  So, that makes me happy!  Linda gave me a heads u that the students would be bringing food tomorrow, so I was excited to see what they would bring.

On my way home, I decided to stop in this store that I have looked in before, but I was getting desperate for a real coat.  I FOUND ONE!!! There were actually a few options, and I tried the ones I liked.  I am the proud owner of an Italian (made in Italy) coat!  I love it, and it is so much warmer!!!  Then, I headed to the Macelleria to get some turkey..mistake...this turkey was somewhat rubbery.  However, i still ate it.  I ate lunch, talked to my momma, talked to April, worked on the crossword lesson plan for tomorrow, and sent some emails.

I talked to Fran, my Italian family, for a few minutes on skype phone.  HOwever, she was home sick, so I told her that I would call her after Christmas!!  Then I talked to Kellly for a few minutes, and I am hoping to talk to them all soon! I miss them!  I miss all of my people!!

Then, random thing happened....my door buzzed, but when I looked out of the window, no one was there.  So I figured it was a grocery ad guy, or a wrong button.  THEN I hear bagpipes outside of my door.  I looked through the peephole, adn there was a guy standing there playing makeshift bagpipes!  I am pretty sure he was looking for money, but I did not dare open the door...no way!  He eventually made his way down the steps, but he was there for a good bit.  I eventually saw him leave, and it was definitely one of the more bazzare things I have seen here.

A little while after this, I went out for a walk.  I just walked down the streets and enjoyed the lights.  I went in a few stores, tried on a few dresses (did not like anything), and slowly walked down the Corso.  I saw a good many students.  I even saw E. from Castrolibero school.  She ran up and gave me a hug, kisses, and of course told me she loves me.  We talked for a few minutes (in Italian) and then we loved on each other, wished each other a Merry Christmas, and parted ways!  I saw some other Castrolibero students and Cosenza students.  It made me smile to hear my name being called out...it makes me feel like I belong here!  I was talking to Nick the whole time, and then I made my way home!  They finally opened this water feature just off of Corso Mazzini: it has been being installed since I got here...and for who knows how long.  I will try to get better pics, but here is one!

I stopped at my veggie place, and they were warm and welcoming as always!  The mom has taken to calling me, "professoressa" or something. It is so cute, but I need to just teacher her my name...

So, I came home, made dinner (mostly veggies), talked to Nick...talked to Erin for a good bit before I made dinner (yay!!), worked on blogs, relaxed, and fell asleep relatively early!!!
