I started with my usual breakfast and then went to school.
Patrizia's class did "The South" review. They had some interesting answers for bless your heart including, "you're an idiot!" Well, that is a blunt way to put it, but I suppose that can be a meaning behind it. They also came up with nicer answers. They also had to define things like: "boilin', steamin', coolin'", etc. They were taken from a towel I took a picture of in Swoozy's before I left. They were all good sports about it, and we were able to talk about what these cooking terms meant, which was good vocabulary practice!! I had to draw some pictures for some of them...like "poppin'" ...as in the grease in the pan is poppin'. Then we did some recipes for macaroni and cheese and mashed potatoes. We talked about ingredients and the directions. It actually went really well.
During my break I went to the bar to get a coffee, then I went to the other building to print my train tickets and reggio information.
Linda's class started off kind of weird. There was stuff happening with a student...some teachers...and something being said about the class...I didn't catch much, but in English Linda said, "well, Elyse thinks you are wonderful students!" Then, MG explained it all to me. Then, I pulled MG aside to tell her about the fellowship and she almost cried. So sweet! Then, we finally made it to the lab where we went over the review, but all they had done was translate the words, not defined them!
After we did the review, they wanted to share their recipes. It was a bit chaotic, and we did not get much accomplished, but we did type out the recipe as they said it...and they were all excited...engaged...shouting out ingredients and directions...and I was happy with their participation! After class, I stayed and looked at MG's presentation about a book/tv show (in English). She had done a great job! There were a few things, but they were all minor things...so proud of her!
My one hour break was spent at the computer printing some other stuff, and I began working on a lesson about units of measurement (metric vs. US....all for Francesca's class). I also saw the headmistress; this one seems to like me! I rarely ever see her, but today she came up and asked me how i was and told me that the mayor had come to school earlier and they had some food, so she wanted to share! So nice of her...she speaks English really well, but we spoke half English/half Italian, which = Englitaliano! I had a few little appetizer type foods, some yucky bitters stuff that they like so much, and then I had to go get copies made for class. Oooh, I forgot...she asked about how I liked her school...umm how do you say, "I love it!" She asked about the other school, and I am always uncomfortable when they do this to me!
Rosina's class was my last one. We could not go to the computer lab, which sucked, but it all worked out in the end. She had two former students come into the class. One just returned from 6 months in Austria where he was studying. He is still finishing high school, but I was super impressed that he went and did this project thing for 6 months. He said he had friends participating in this in the US as well. He spoke English REALLY WELL...and he also speaks a bit of German! I am always sooo impressed with bi/tri lingual people (and ESPECIALLY people who speak more than 3 languages). So, once we got the smart board set up, we continued with "The South"...well, we reviewed and then continued. When Rosina stepped out, I apologized to my students for having to give them so much homework, but she has insisted that I do it...they told me not to worry and that they still love me!! Okay, so long as we've cleared that up! So, the lesson went well...and I volunteered myself to look at the homework I had given them, and Rosina was relieved. I will not give grades, but I can check for other stuff.
So...with that, the work week was over. I headed home, went to the bakery down the street to get some wheat bread, had lunch, talked to my momma, talked to Nick, worked on Reggio stuff, and then spent quite a bit of time working on my "units of measurement" lesson.
Later, I had to decide what I wanted to eat for dinner. I wanted...nothing...but I was hungry. I headed to the store with the intention of getting some meat, but once I arrived at the store, I decided I just wanted eggs....and GRITS!! Yes, my momma brought me grits, so now I can be a Southern girl, in southern Italy! :) Now, I am a cheese grits girl..but Italy does not have cheddar cheese. So, I began googleing things on my phone. I was having signal issues, and finally got a few websites to show up. I did not see many cheeses that were options for me tonight, but then I found a website that had a particular Italian cheese that was supposed to be the perfect substitute for cheddar. I had already approached the meat/cheese counter a few minutes before, and the guy gave me a look of, "ooh nooo...it's that American girl who always asks for turkey and each time she does...I pretend that I do not understand her...!" So, when I asked about the cheese, I eventually had to turn my phone around to show it to him. I was pointing, and when he could not read it, he took it from me. He had just put on clean gloves to handle the meat, and then he took my phone to read it. When he did, he was pointing to it and the other meat guy joined him. They were both now touching my phone and then told me that he did not know what this cheese was. He then hands me my phone back, and without changing gloves, proceeds to help the lady next to me with the meat she wanted. BUONASERA TUTTI!!! What an uniquely Italian moment! I couldn't believe it, but I could not help but laugh. I ended up going with some gouda cheese...I also stopped and got some fruit at my regular place!
When I came home, I made my grits and two fried eggs. The grits were good, but not as satisfying as I had wanted because they were not CHEDDAR cheese grits... I talked to Nick a lot...worked on blogs...worked on lessons ...did Bible study...took a shower...and then Nick and I talked about Bible Study together! This is now one of my favorite parts of the day because we are studying God's word, growing closer to Him, and learning so much about each other at the same time!
*Dream come true right there!!!*
