Nessun posto è bello a casa mia

The guys working on the elevator woke me up bright and early this morning.  I had oatmeal for breakfast while Nick slept in a bit.  I took a shower, and then found “The Wizard of Oz” on tv.  It was so much fun to watch it, even though it was dubbed in Italian.  However, the songs were not dubbed and therefore still in their original format.  I found the movie right as she was about to sing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow”.  I ended up getting to watch the whole movie, and the end was my favorite…when she is “back home” and she is saying, “There’s No Place Like Home!”  I think they were saying, “Nessun posto è bello a casa mia!” While watching, I tried to map out a plan for the day…well, at least a few sights that we might want to see!

Our first stops were some churches.  We stopped at one or two along the way to the main one I wanted him to see.  We were able to go in my favorite one, and it was simply beautiful!!  He seemed to enjoy seeing the churches as well!

Sorry guys...still having trouble turning some of them!!
Then we spotted this organic market and made our way to it…it did not have much, but it was by the river and it was a beautiful day! So, I sat on the wall while he stood up next to it and we just talked for like an hour!  It was such an Italian thing to do!  We were in no hurry, the sun was shining, and it was great conversation…about all kinds of things…being that it was gameday…we also talked about Alabama vs. LSU.  I love that we have some random things in common and we never seem to run out of things to talk about!  We slowly made our way towards the theatre, but a different route than I’ve taken yet.  We found a cute little piazza with a nice fountain. We sat for a few minutes, but it was too chilly with the wind blowing and not enough direct sunlight.  I then discovered that we were at the bottom of the hill from the gardens that I saw next to the theatre.  What a happy coincidence.  We found it odd though that all of these pine trees and other trees are growing alongside the palm trees!  The slight hike up the garden was beautiful though!  I did something to get in the embassy slide show, by climbing to the other side of a fence above a pond, but no worries, no one got arrested!! ;) Anything for a picture…
We strolled through the main area of the gardens and discovered this old outdoor theatre that has been practically destroyed with graffiti.  It looked like it would have once been an amazing place to see a summer show…perhaps they do use it in the summer…I do not know!  We made our way to the main theatre and found that it was still semi-closed, but the guy agreed to turn on the lights for us so that Nick could see! I was so excited that his first words were exactly what I thought when I walked into the theatre for the first time a few weeks ago, “oh my gosh…it is out of Phantom of the Opera”!!  I was so excited that he thought the same thing…and later he would hum the song so that it was stuck in my head all day!!  I was so excited to see the theatre again, but it gave me a renewed need to see a show there!!

We left the theatre and made our way back to the apartment to make lunch.  We made chicken, pasta with pesto and we finished the bottle of wine.  We had a funny conversation about April Fool’s Day…I told him the story about the April Fool’s joke that Mike and I pulled on his mother one year…

We were tired, so we decided to watch a movie and he wanted to watch one of mine, so we decided to watch “Eat, Pray, Love” and he really liked it!!  He said that it was a really well made movie and that he does sometimes enjoy some romantic moments.  I was really happy that he loved the movie.

Franco, Virginia’s husband, came and brought some gifts for Nick to take to his teacher, Anna Paola.  So weird thing, Virginia, my teacher, and Nick’s teacher, Anna Paola, are good friends.  It is crazy that our teachers are good friends.

After this we were headed to Corso Mazzini for our passeggiata.  It was so nice and relaxing just to walk.  We were in search of a restaurant, but never found it.  So, we went to the restaurant that I went to one night…the one where I got the free appetizers, wine, and rose; during that first week I was here.  We were there kind of early, but the guy let us sit down anyway!  We had wine and bread and ordered the same pasta that I ordered the last time, and it was just as good.  The owner guy was just as nice as last time, and I really enjoyed the food and wine!

When we left the restaurant we stopped to get another bottle of Calabrian wine.  We ended up getting a really good bottle, but only drinking a bit of it.  We "tailgated" with it...I made Nick wear the Roll Tide beads so that he could display his true support!!
When we finished eating, we watched, "The Help", per Nick’s suggestion.  He once again loved it.  However, the movie ended so late, that it was almost time for the Alabama game to start, so we pulled it up on ESPN to watch the live feed.  We (I) actually ended up staying awake for the entire game!  There was a moment of PANIC, but in the end WE WON!!!!!!!!!! Roll Tide!!  We are amazing…too close for comfort…Roll Tide!! I was soo sooo sooo sleepy, but it was worth knowing who won!!  My momma called me right after, and I was so excited to tell her I knew.  We talked for a few minutes…and it was nice to talk to my momma…and about something so important.  However, I will give Nick that he was really excited for us!
